Domain Transfer Details

Transfer Procedure

  • The transfer of a .io domain must be initiated with an ‘Authorization Code’, which the current registrar provides.
  • This is obtained by the owner or Admin-C of the domain from the current registrar.
  • Make sure the correct ‘Authorization Code’ is present to start the transfer, otherwise, it will fail.
  • The code is generally requested during the transfer process.
  • Ensure there is no lock-status (REGISTRAR-LOCK or HOLD), which is visible in the WHOIS. The owner can initiate unlocking if necessary.
  • The transfer should be started well before the domain expires.
  • Domains younger than 60 days cannot be transferred.
  • After a domain transfer, there is a 5-day period during which the domain cannot be re-transferred.
